Meet Monique the sailing chicken
When 24-year-old Guirec Soudee explained that he was going to get a seafaring companion, no one expected it would be a chicken.
"I thought about a cat, but decided it would be too much effort to look after it," he says.
"The hen was an ideal choice. It doesn't need that much looking after and I'm able to get eggs at sea. People told me it wouldn't work, that the hen would be too stressed and wouldn't lay eggs." the travelling Frenchman explains.
Monique spends her days freely roaming the deck of his boat, and occasionally enjoys swimming, windsurfing and paddle boarding.
"Compared with people, she doesn't complain at all.
"She follows me everywhere, and doesn't create any problems. All I need to do is shout 'Monique!' and she will come to me, sit on me, give me company. She is amazing.
"But I won't lie, she can get on my nerves sometimes."
Monique's diet mainly consists of grain, corn and occasionally fish. "She'll eat absolutely anything" Guirec explains.
For now, the biggest problem is quarantine regulations and customs official – something that Guirec had to face only once in Canada.
However, they already have their next big trip planned: a sail through the Artic towards Nome in Alaska.
